Although we have redesigned the
glazing bead for the CrystalLine Hinge System in order to make
it easier to install, sometimes it can be difficult to install
the bead while trying to keep the glass in place.
This idea began by using glass
bumpers, usually made of cork, to keep the glass from rattling
around in the jambs while working on the mechanics of the job
and grew into a simple system that takes about 15 minutes off
of installation time.
After inserting the cork bumpers
between the glass and jambs on the outside of the unit, install
the inside horizontal and then the vertical bead from the top
down. With the bumpers in place, the inside bead
seats easily, does not fall out and is not as easy to push in
too far. This allows you to install all of the interior
bead at one time.
For buttress applications, two
bumpers spaced evenly will usually do the job while full-height
panels require three to four bumpers per jamb. Once the
inside bead is done, expect the exterior bead to be a little
more difficult to seat. If necessary, lubricate the outside
glass surface with a light mist of glass cleaner. Finally, work
the outside bead (horizontal first then vertical from the top
down) removing the cork bumpers as you reach them. Having a
"tool" can save your fingers a lot of wear and tear. A small
rubber mallet with one edge cut flat or a small block of 2-by-4
lumber both work well.
This idea is implemented at no
additional cost. Glass bumpers can be found on all of our custom
glazed units.
